Fug Girls and the Next Harrison

I couldn't resist reposting this! As many of you know I LOVE Harrison Ford. Han and Indy? Hello? The fug girls have a slideshow up about who Hollywood thinks will be the new 'it' guys. I loved this post about Chris Pine being the new Harrison (the comment on the whip did it for me).

Rachel Getting Married

So, I just finished watching Rachel Getting Married. I remember going to the Toronto Film Festival went this came out and everyone talking about how great Anne Hathaway is in it. And she is really good, but I'm not sure about the movie as a whole. I just found it very odd. I think it was all the musicians everywhere. I don't know why this kept taking me out of the story, but it did. I found it very distracting.

Beautitul Post

I'm, obviously, a child of the 70's, and a very sentimental one at that. This week with the passing of John Hughes I was taken back to my teenage years and all of his wonderful movies. (As my friends from that time can attest I was obsessed with Ferris / Matthew.)

This morning I read a really moving blog post (and an excellent follow-up post). From all the comments the writer has received I know I was not the only one that was moved by what she wrote. For those of you out there that were also fans of his movies, I highly recommend popping over to her site.

Books and Movies and Stuff

The current book I'm listening to on CD is once again quite annoying. Holy product placement, Batman! Whenever the author describes anything it is with a brand name. Plus, once again it's a woman who doesn't stand up for herself. I really wish I could pick a book with a strong woman as a central character.

I just finished watching Triviatown. It's a great documentary on the world's largest trivia contest. Now, I probably really liked the movie since I play trivia every week, but I found it really interesting. I would love to go and play in their contest. Unfortunately, based on the questions I heard I would not do well at all! Those are some tough questions.

Last week was our trivia finals (my team just made it in). Three teams make it into the finals every season. We lost but there were some good rounds. The team Clueless did an awesome job this season with the questions.

Twilight Fun

Okay, I keep meaning to blog about my obsession with Twilight, but that will have to wait.

This blog I found is awesome! Check it out: I may need to get the Buffy action figure and the Edward Cullen doll to go with my Angel puppet.

(I love the quip from Buffy in the comments: "Oh, yay. It's a disco-vamp.")

But, the best part? The clip on this page. It's phenomenal. I miss Buffy!

Lars and the Real Girl

This week I've actually been watching the movies that I picked up from the library. Last night it was 'Lars and the Real Girl'.

This was a movie that I really wanted to see last year. I love Ryan Gosling and am always impressed with his choices. This movie was no exception. I cried and laughed a lot during this movie. I read some comments on IMDB.com afterwards (which I normally do after I watch a movie). One of the threads started out very negative. They seemed to feel that a community would never rally around someone like this. The more I think about it, the more I appreciate growing up in Goderich. I have many issues with growing up in such a small town (and in no way will I say that Goderich is tolerant), but I do believe that small towns can be very accepting and loving. I know that sounds like I've contradicted myself. Without getting into specifics Goderich has shown me its intolerance and its acceptance.

But, back to the movie. Check this out, let me know what you think. I thought it was great and once again it is a movie that makes me think. It wasn't just Ryan that was so great in this film, it was everyone.

Boy A

I just finished watching 'Boy A'. My trainer recommended this movie and I am definitely going to recommend it as well. It is definitely a movie that makes you think, and I believe I'll be thinking about this one for awhile.

I think it's a better movie if you don't have any knowledge or expectations going into it. Go check it out.

Golden Globes

Last night was the Golden Globes which I watch for the fashions and to see who will get crazy drunk and make a crazy speech. I loved Ricky Gervais' speech (and the fact that he came out with a pint of beer).

My favourite fashion of the evening was Kyra Sedgwick http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2009/01/live_the_red-carpet_looks_from.html#photo=55. I love the red dress!

Least favourite for sure was Renee Zellweger http://nymag.com/daily/fashion/2009/01/live_the_red-carpet_looks_from.html#photo=53. There is definitely something wrong with the top of the dress.

And was it just me or was Demi Moore's dress see-through when she was on stage?

Michael Cera is Such a Cutie

Yesterday was a day filled with TIFF action for me. I had plans to take the bus into Toronto and TTC it around the city. Unfortunately, I was running late in the morning and it can take a good 2 hours to get from my house in Mississauga to downtown. So, the car went with me (thank goodness for green P parking). I was running so late I didn't get a chance to eat breakfast or lunch before my first movie (I was starving). First up for the day was 'The Secret of Moonacre'. This was my second choice for early Saturday afternoon. My first choice was the 'The Largest Chinese Restaurant In the World' (but no one seemed to get this movie - from discussions I had with people at the festival). 'Moonacre' was a fantasy kid's movie. I love fantasy so I was looking forward to this. I wasn't too far in the line and it was playing at the Winter Garden Theatre (which is such a beautiful theatre). Two of the stars were there (one being the girl from 'The Golden Compass'). Unfortunately, the movie didn't find it's groove. It wasn't fantastical, it just felt like it was trying too hard. There were a couple of instances where it felt like it had found that right mix of fantasy and real, but then it lost it again. I was rather disappointed.

After that I had a few hours before 'Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist'. This was the movie I was most looking forward to. I grabbed some food and walked around the Eaton Centre but wasn't really feeling it so I went and got in line about 2 hours before the movie started (which meant I was pretty close to the front of the line - probably about 30th). It gave me lots of time to knit :) Here's the issue with the film festival: I'm going to see the movie so I'm in line, which means I can't see the red carpet. I can't see the stars! I like the stars. I want to see the stars. But, if I want a good seat I have to get in line. So, I saw the limos. I saw the cameras. I heard the girls screaming for Michael Cera, but I didn't get to see anything. Well, that's not exactly true. I saw Tyler Labine (Sock from Reaper) waiting to walk the red carpet and I did see Michael Cera talking to the reporters when I was walking into the theatre (but they keep you walking pretty quickly so I was only able to stop for a quick second and one picture). Before the movie started they brought out the cast to say a quick hi (apparently this was the World Premiere so everyone was there - people were commenting on how many rows were sectioned off for reserved seating - normally there are one or two rows but this time there were at least 10). When Michael Cera came out on stage there was a lot of screaming (for those of you who don't know, he's from Brampton and was in Arrested Development, Juno and Superbad); then when the movie started and the first frame was of Michael Cera everyone screamed again (there was a lot of love for Michael in the theatre); after the movie the MC told us she would not accept questions that started with 'Michael We Love You. We take that as a given.'

The movie was really good. Michael was awesome as always. There were a couple of scenes that I felt were a little flat, but it was a good 'crazy night in New York movie'. I've had nights like this and they were always so awesome (maybe not quite as crazy, but definitely nights that just had a lot going on, where you didn't want them to end).

After the movie I met up with Lisa and friends for a drink before heading over to see her brother Mark's movie. Lisa had the job of trying to get her family in line for the movie. I would say Mark definitely had the largest contingent of people in the theatre. There were 6 short films at this screening and all very different. I've never really seen a group of shorts before so this was pretty cool. One of the shorts, 'Next Floor', was really interesting but also very disturbing. Mark's movie was good. I really liked the look of the film, but there were parts of the acting that kind of took me out of the enjoyment, overall though, I really liked it and was really happy for Mark to be at TIFF. After the presentation we headed over to Coca for the after party. The patio is really nice and it was a gorgeous night.

Today I had one movie to see, 'Witch Hunt'. This was a documentary about Bakersfield, California and a number of people that were wrongly accused of child molestation. It was a very emotional movie and one of the really interesting things they did was talk about how this affected the children involved. The children were coerced into accusing the adults and it has now affected them in their adults lives. It was very moving. Sean Penn narrated and he was in the audience. But, what was really great was the fact that a number of the kids and the accused were in the audience and they were available for the Q&A after the film. There were a lot of tears in the audience and a number of standing ovations. It was a very powerful moment for me (and I believe a number of others) at the festival.

This is what I love about the festival and why I am so glad that I chose to go to more than one movie this year - the moments that you weren't expecting. Friday night I wasn't expecting to be sitting in the same theatre as Jimmy Page, today I wasn't expecting to be so moved by a film and last night I was able to see a movie made by a friend. I only have two more movies left and I am wishing I had more.

Jimmy Page, Jack White and The Edge ... oh my!

Just returned from my first movie at the festival. I hadn't checked any of the news so I had no idea that The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White were expected at the screening of 'It Might Be Loud' (Elisabeth Sue was there as well, but I couldn't see her). I also didn't expect them to come in and sit to watch the movie (I'm such a TIFF newbie). It was crazy, I could see Jimmy Page and The Edge if I looked around during the movie (they were sitting about 20 feet from where I was). Not that I looked around alot during the movie. It was so good! Watching the three of them jam was amazing. After the movie there was a question and answer which was very cool. Jack White is really tall, or at least really seems like it. He's taller than Jimmy Page and I think he's pretty tall. The Edge is sooo sexy and Jack White definitely has that 'thing'.

I stuck around to see them walk out. It was kind of funny, hardly any of the people waiting around had seen the movie. Most people had just been hanging out at the door waiting for them to go in and to come out.

The lineup waiting for the movie was crazy; wrapped around the block. I had brought my knitting so that was good. This next week of movies may give me the time to finish off this project :)

So, I'm highly recommending 'It Might Get Loud'. The three guys talk about how they came to be guitarists, they jammed, talked about some of their favourite songs and beginnings with their bands. I loved it.

Us Chickens at TIFF

Lisa's brother, Mark, has a movie premiering at the Toronto Film Festival this weekend. It's called 'Us Chickens'. Mention of the movie made it into the Sun today:
http://www.torontosun.com/TorontoFilmFestival08/news/2008/09/05/6666836-sun.html

I am excited about seeing Mark's movie as well as my other 6 selections for the festival. I start tonight with 'It Might Get Loud' (with The Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White). Tomorrow I'm seeing three presentations (including the Short Cuts presentation which will include Mark's movie). I've been to a few movies in the past for the festival, but this will be my first full-fledged undertaking. Well, I guess it's not really full-fledged since Lisa did most of the leg-work for me. It was all crazy trying to get the tickets and movie selections completed in time (THANK YOU Lisa). I'm seeing a couple of documentaries, the short program and at least one 'Hollywood' movie (ie the Michael Cera film 'Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist' I am so excited to see).

I will try to keep my blog updated on the festivities, but I'll probably be crazy tired after all the running around.

Night and Fog

Last night I watched the 1955 documentary 'Night and Fog'. It is ranked #2 on the imdb.com documentary list. Very powerful depiction of the Nazi concentration camps. Stuff like this makes me wonder how we can think we are an intelligent race.

Riding Giants

I just finished watching 'Riding Giants', a documentary by Stacey Peralta (the same guy that did 'Dogtown and Z-boys). This one is about the history of big wave surfing. Jeremy recommended this one to me. Very cool movie. The waves are crazy and it was really well done. I can't wait for my dad to check this out. There is a small bit of windsurfing in the movie, which really made me want to get back out in the water. These guys are crazy. Some of it reminded me of the day we were out at the beach after the last remnants of a hurricane had made its way up to Goderich. I wasn't allowed out (not that I would have gone). The waves were huge and I'm pretty sure Ian did a full flip (the 13 ft mast cleared). I was freaked out once the lightning started. It was a crazy, crazy day.

Oscar Winners

IMDB.com had a poll today about how many best picture Oscar films you've seen. There have been 81 so far and I have seen 53 of them. I didn't realize I was so close to seeing them all, so I guess that will be one of the next lists I try to finish off. I haven't seen this year's winner 'No Country for Old Men', but I do want to see it. I have to go back to 1990 for the last one I haven't seen, 'Driving Miss Daisy'.

Sunday was Oscar night and there had been some worry that the Oscars would not go on this year. The writer's strike had taken its toll on the Golden Globes and I would have been rather upset if the Oscars had also been affected. Luckily the strike ended.

Julia invited a group of us over for a housewarming / Oscar party. She just moved into a new apartment near high park. I headed over early afternoon to start watching the Oscar coverage (it started on some stations at noon). I hung out for a bit with the gang and then had to head out for my hockey game. The Oscar show started at 8:30 and my game ended at 8:15. I only missed the first award and the mologue. I also missed the red carpet, which is my favourite part of the show :(. Unfortunately, my two boys were not looking at their best (Mr. Viggo Mortensen and Mr. James McAvoy). But, Jana's definitely looked good (Mr. Jason Bateman). And everyone's fav (Mr. George Clooney) looked great as always.

I haven't had a chance to look through all the outfits, but I thought Laura Linney and Miley Cyrus looked really good. I loved all the red!

I didn't do very well on my Oscar poll. There were a lot of upsets and my favs didn't win very much. I was really happy that Juno won for best original screenplay!

Atonement

Saw Atonement last night. I went in not knowing anything about the movie (other than it being up for Golden Globe awards and that Keira Knightley was in it).

Well, I'm so glad I went into the movie that way. I was mesmerized. The cinematography is amazing. It is so beautiful to watch.

Then there is James McAvoy. Damn he's fine! He totally made the movie for me. It was a heartbreaking performance. I was also quite impressed with Keira Knightley. Normally, she kind of annoys me, but I thought she was very good in this movie. It makes me want to see Pride & Prejudice now.

Go see this film, just for the beauty of the film if nothing else.

Even More Movies - Ah Leo!

In my movie mania and hungover stupor I watched even more movies over the last couple of days. Yesterday I attempted to watch Dreamgirls, but fell asleep and kept dreaming about the song that plays during the menu screen (in a car yelling for someone to change the damn station).

But, I did manage to watch Knocked Up and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. I think I watched Knocked Up too soon after Superbad. It was okay. Had some pretty funny parts, but not one of my favs. Harry was okay, but I kept mixing up the books in my mind and so kept thinking other things were going to happen.

Today, though, made up for both of those. I finally watched Blood Diamond with Leo Dicaprio. Damn but he is HOT!! I will have to watch this again. He was just awesome in this. Plus, it was a damn good movie. Rent this if you haven't already.

Still on the shelf: Dreamgirls and Half Nelson (oh Ryan Gosling, maybe a little too much eye candy after Leo - who am I kidding, can never have enough eye candy - and damn fine actors to boot).

More Movies!

That's right, I'm on a movie watching kick this weekend.

When I dropped off the first three movies of the weekend, I picked up three more. 'The Devil Wears Prada', 'Alpha Dog' and 'Elephant'. I was surprisingly happy with prada. I didn't have any expectations going in and was just hoping for something fun, which it was. The clothing was great and really made me wish I was a size 4 (and not 4'11" :). Elephant was not my cup of tea. Not sure if I was just not in the mood or what, but it just didn't hold my attention (which I know it should have). Lisa loved it and it won at Cannes. It's got a Columbine thing going on. Just not sure why I didn't like it.

Now, Alpha Dog. Maybe this was what I was in the mood for, but it really held my attention. Justin Timberlake was excellent as was Emile Hirsch (who I've liked since Dogtown and can't wait to see in 'Into the Wild'). It reminded me of some of the books I read in high school when I was in my heavy metal phase. There was this book called 'Say You Love Satan'. It had that same kind of feel of how things just get way out of control.

Tara and I attempted to go see 'Atonement' tonight, but it was sold out. Instead we went to see 'Juno'. Unfortunately, we could only get seats in the front row. That sucked. But, the movie was awesome. I love Ellen Page (you must see Hard Candy) and Michael Cera (as mentioned earlier this weekend). It was so cute and hilarious! Go see this movie.

Movies

I actually watched a bunch of movies this weekend. In gearing up for the awards season, Julia and I rented 'Eastern Promises'. This is the new Cronenberg / Viggo film. It was not good, unfortunately. While at the store I also rented 'Superbad' and 'Stardust'. I never go rent movies (I normally borrow from the library), but I was all excited to rent movies I hadn't seen.

Stardust was awesome. I read the book last year and loved it. I absolutely loved the movie and highly recommend it. It's a fun, magical movie. I think I liked the movie because it had been awhile since I read the book, so I didn't have huge expectations. I'm pretty sure it will be a movie I add to my collection.

Superbad was pretty good. Not all fart jokes like I expected. Plus, I do like Michael Cera.

I'm attempting to finish reading the His Dark Materials trilogy (Golden Compass, etc). I'm on the last book and I'm just not into it. I know my brother loved the series, but I'm not a huge fan. Lisa and Christi bought me books for Christmas and I can't wait to start those. I somedays wish I was like Lisa and could read multiple books at the same time. Alas, I must finish off The Amber Spyglass first.

I've been sleeping most of the weekend (took Friday off as well and slept most of the day). I'm thinking I may have caught a touch of the flu my Grandma had over the holidays.

Reading Finally

I started this earlier in the week and never got back to it. I am so not paying attention to my blogging. I totally forgot what I was going to write about.

I read 'Blaze' last week. This is a book written by Stephen King (as Richard Backman). Apparently this was written back in 1973 and he didn't think it was good enough. Well, it was definitely good enough. I couldn't put it down. It definitely made me remember why I loved reading King for so many years. The last couple of books have left something to be desired, but other than me wanting the book to never end I was quite happy (well, I did cry while reading, but that's besides the point).

I just finished watching the Dixie Chicks' documentary 'Shut Up & Sing'. I highly recommend it. Of course, it really reminded my of watching the footage when John Lennon made the comment that The Beatles were bigger than Jesus. People need to calm down and let people speak. I completely agree with Natalie's right to say what she said (and I agree with the sentiment as I definitely am not a fan of Bush). It's sort of funny (in a not really sort of way) that the southern states are always the ones boycotting the bands and throwing out their music. Ah stupidity. What I don't get is that Green Day wrote an entire album about what an ass the president is and spoke about it at each of their concerts. Yet nothing was ever said about that. The Dixie Chicks certainly weren't the only band / artist to say something publicly against the president. I am glad that they found a different fan base (and happy to hear in the movie that Toronto kicked ass at buying concert tickets). I know I love the album that came out of the whole thing.
